2021 – 2023 Summary

Like all Canadians we here at Roycroft Consulting are grateful to all the people who have continued to work in whatever field to support all of us facing these challenging times. While business has certainly slowed down, Rob has continued to be active on smaller and interesting projects, including:

City of Port Alberni

Rob worked with staff on an application to exclude the McLean Mill National Historic site from the BC Agricultural Land Reserve. Part of his efforts included chairing a Public Hearing as required under the ALC regulations. This effort was successful, and the National Historic Site was removed from the ALR to enable the City to operate a wider range of activities.

Village of Lytton

Rob was contacted by the Village through efforts of LGMA to find support following the devastating wildfire. He spent a week in smoky Kamloops in the temporary Village office working on securing temporary housing for displaced residents. This included seeking available temporary camps, sites, and other forms of rental accommodation in the area.

Regional District of Nanaimo

Prior to the last municipal election, Rob prepared and delivered 2 seminars entitled “So you want to be on Council”. These were intended to provide citizens contemplating running for office as a Regional Director information about the workings of elected officials, obligations, and responsibilities.

Sitefinders Real Estate Services

Rob continues to work with Sitefinders as they are trying to finalize a project to build a 20-unit affordable housing project in High River, AB. Support has been provided to work out arrangements for the developer to obtain CMHC mortgage financing, and other municipal approvals. Part of this work included the separation of the existing three strata lots into one strata and 2 freehold lots.  Recent efforts have been directed towards finalizing all conditions of the Development Permit and securing a Development Agreement.

In addition, Rob has been asked to initiate work on a Live/Work project in High River.

Drone

Rob has been using his Transport Canada registered drone to monitor various sites along the Englishman River for local environmental groups as well as for a local developer of a residential project in Parksville.

City of Courtenay

Rob was appointed as the Interim Director of Development Services for the City of Courtenay, following the departure of the previous incumbent. This assignment began in the Fall of 2022 and extended into Spring 2023.

Planning Institute of BC

Rob continued to support junior members of the planning profession and students. He also continued to work with the Planning Institute of BC through the annual conference and participating as a member of the Governance and Nominating Committee.

Tlowitsis First Nation

Rob was asked to lead several public open houses for the Tlowitsis First Nation. These sessions, one virtual and the other face-to-face, were held in Port McNeil. The sessions were a requirement for the submission of various applications to seek approval for a new Salmon Farm Operation called Ga-guump in the Minstrel Island/Chatham Channel area.  Challenges faced included vaccine hesitancy, strong public opinions both for and against, along with the active participation of other First Nation representatives from the area.
