2020 started with Rob assisting the Town of Strathmore on their new Municipal Hall construction project. He worked with staff and the design team to get a complete understanding of the status of the overall project which had been started but was encountering some unforeseen challenges. Updating budgets and construction forecast was a significant part of that effort. Bringing Council back into a major directional role for the project was achieved, as well as enhanced community information.

The COVID 19 issue certainly impacted Rob’s ability to support clients. One of the benefits of being at home more was the opportunity to see new experiences in the ocean in front of our house. Good luck has afforded Rob the chance to employ his drone flying in North West Bay. Photos of Scooter Ducks, Sea Lions, Orcas and even an immature Gray Whale have been a great outcome.

Rob has also been volunteering with the Mid Vancouver Island Habitat Enhancement Society. Using his drone, Rob has been able to update various scientific research projects such as monitoring eel grass colonies along the ocean coast as well as flow measurements and landform changes in the Englishman River.

Kathy and Rob did manage to enjoy a few weeks in Cuba, returning home just prior to the pandemic.

Rob worked with a private sector client on the affordable housing project he had supported previously in High River, AB. That effort secured a Development Permit, which was not activated due to pandemic issues. He was able to work with Town of High River staff to obtain a 2-year extension for the permit, hoping to see the construction start in 2021.

Rob continued to work with students at Vancouver Island University in the School of Community Planning, and to participate as a member of the Governance and Nominating Committee for the Planning Institute of BC.  He was also able to mentor and support several students in the Planning program.
