Project name:

Strathmore Motor Products Sports Centre

Project description:

The Strathmore Motor Products Sports Centre has opened and will enhance and expand the recreation opportunities for residents of Wheatland County and the Town of Strathmore. Rob was the Project Lead for the Town and spent almost 18 months supporting the project. Conceived as a unique in Alberta partnership, the facility includes a Kindergarten to Grade 9 school and a Recreational Fieldhouse built in an integrated fashion. In addition to the school classrooms, it provides space for all types of indoor sports and an indoor walking/running track.

  • Project kick off in 2015
  • Agreement between Town, County and Golden Hills School District
  • Construction started in July 2017
  • Partial occupancy of school was achieved in early September 2018
  • Complete occupancy for school in October with entire facility secured in December

Additional Enhancements

  • Backup Power system to enable use as an Emergency Response Centre
  • Air Conditioning to improve year round use
  • Removable Boards to Maximize Programming Flexibility
  • Sports Fields along east side of site for future use to be determined through master plan with final construction in future years
  • Large doors to allow for vehicles to enter for large events

Financial Matters

  • Golden Hills School Division, the County of Wheatland, and the Town entered into a partnership agreement and each contributed towards the capital cost of the facility
  • Minor unanticipated cost were incurred due to excess topsoil and harsh winter conditions
  • Difficult and challenging choices and decisions were required along the way to maintain the project budget
  • The Town recognized additional funding would be required over time to add features and equipment, so a consultant was brought in to develop a Naming & Sponsorship Program, which the Town assumed responsibility for internally
  • In excess of $575,000 to be received over 10-15 years resulted from these efforts which is considered to be quite successful for a facility of this nature in this size of community
